Monday morning Wes was getting ready to go for a run along the lake. He stepped outside of his house just down the street from his restaurant. The house he had bought for Angela as a wedding present. The house he now lived in alone. Goddammit, he was terrified of getting hurt again. He had taken Meghan’s advice and gotten lost in something else: her! The problem was that kiss felt like a hell of a lot more than proving to his family that he didn’t care anymore. What if he did care? And what if he got burned even worse than before? He of all people knew she didn’t trust men, and she was leaving at the end of the summer.

What the hell had he been thinking?

He hadn’t been, and that was the problem. He looked up and ran into his brother Gabe. He and Gabe were closest in age. They had formed the tightest bond of all of his brothers. That’s why his betrayal hurt the most.

“Can we talk?” Gabe asked, shoving his hands in his pockets.

Wes glanced at the car, relieved to see Angela wasn’t with him. “About what, Gabe? Don’t you think the time for talking has passed? Seems to me you might have tried talking before you ran off with my fiancée and married her.”

“I’m sorry, for what it’s worth, but I thought you had moved on.”

“It’s not worth shit, I have moved on, but you can still go to hell,” Wes snapped. “You’re not forgiven and you never will be, no matter if I’ve moved on or not.” Wesley paced, feeling his rage boil within him.

For almost a year he had thought about what had happened and what he would say when he saw them again. He hadn’t talked to either of them since he’d read her note. He’d played nice in the sandbox for the sake of his mother, but goddamn, he wanted to throw the shit in his brother’s eyes.

The lump in Wesley’s throat was huge, and he could barely get the words out. “You’re my brother, Gabe. My goddamned brother! I trusted you, and you betrayed me in the worst way. How could you?”

“Dammit, Wes, that’s not fair. I know we hurt you, but you were so focused on work back then, you didn’t think of anyone but yourself. We tried to talk to you several times before anything happened between us, but you just wouldn’t listen. We crossed an unforgivable line. We didn’t mean for any of this to happen, but if you were honest with yourself, you would admit that you wouldn’t have been happy together. You ignored her for months. Hell, you practically forced us together by having her work at Dad’s company.”

Before he was even aware of what was happening, Wes’s body reacted. He balled his fist and punched his brother across the face. A right jab and hard. Gabe could have easily deflected the punch, but he didn’t. He stood there and took it like a man.
