Monday morning Wes was getting ready to go for a run along the lake. He stepped outside of his house just down the street from his restaurant. The house he had bought for Angela as a wedding present. The house he now lived in alone. Goddammit, he was terrified of getting hurt again. He had taken Meghanâs advice and gotten lost in something else: her! The problem was that kiss felt like a hell of a lot more than proving to his family that he didnât care anymore. What if he did care? And what if he got burned even worse than before? He of all people knew she didnât trust men, and she was leaving at the end of the summer.
What the hell had he been thinking?
He hadnât been, and that was the problem. He looked up and ran into his brother Gabe. He and Gabe were closest in age. They had formed the tightest bond of all of his brothers. Thatâs why his betrayal hurt the most.
âCan we talk?â Gabe asked, shoving his hands in his pockets.
Wes glanced at the car, relieved to see Angela wasnât with him. âAbout what, Gabe? Donât you think the time for talking has passed? Seems to me you might have tried talking before you ran off with my fiancée and married her.â
âIâm sorry, for what itâs worth, but I thought you had moved on.â
âItâs not worth shit, I have moved on, but you can still go to hell,â Wes snapped. âYouâre not forgiven and you never will be, no matter if Iâve moved on or not.â Wesley paced, feeling his rage boil within him.
For almost a year he had thought about what had happened and what he would say when he saw them again. He hadnât talked to either of them since heâd read her note. Heâd played nice in the sandbox for the sake of his mother, but goddamn, he wanted to throw the shit in his brotherâs eyes.
The lump in Wesleyâs throat was huge, and he could barely get the words out. âYouâre my brother, Gabe. My goddamned brother! I trusted you, and you betrayed me in the worst way. How could you?â
âDammit, Wes, thatâs not fair. I know we hurt you, but you were so focused on work back then, you didnât think of anyone but yourself. We tried to talk to you several times before anything happened between us, but you just wouldnât listen. We crossed an unforgivable line. We didnât mean for any of this to happen, but if you were honest with yourself, you would admit that you wouldnât have been happy together. You ignored her for months. Hell, you practically forced us together by having her work at Dadâs company.â
Before he was even aware of what was happening, Wesâs body reacted. He balled his fist and punched his brother across the face. A right jab and hard. Gabe could have easily deflected the punch, but he didnât. He stood there and took it like a man.
